As we approach the 2024 Appleby Fair, I just wanted to get in touch and explain our plans. I have taken over the Community SGT role from PS Amanda McKirdy and I will be working under the direction of Insp Mo Bibby (Eden Neighbourhood Police Team Insp) we will be working alongside Emma Brass from Westmorland and Furness Council regards any encampment issues. This year we will not be attending parish meetings, so please pass any feedback from your upcoming meetings on to us.
Police patrols will start on 20th May and run until Wednesday 12th June covering the length of the encampments from Kirkby Lonsdale through to Alston and everywhere in between. This will see a combination of mobile, static and foot patrols covering the busiest areas. The staffing will be centrally coordinated and comprise of an early and backshift providing coverage between 0700-0100 during this time. The resourcing model this year allows more flexibility to reposition staff to where they are needed. The supervision of this staffing is made up of experienced Officers to ensure consistency and local knowledge.
Any incidents requiring Police attendance need to be made via 101 or 999. I will be on duty throughout so any issues you’d like to speak to me about, not requiring a police attendance there and then, feel free to contact me. My work mobile phone number is at the bottom of this email.
The services provided by Westmorland and Furness Council will mirror those provided in other years by Eden District Council.
The MASCG website will be updated with tolerated stopping sites, and we will continue to receive and respond to information from our counterparts over the County borders regards migration. There will also be some useful information on there regards legislation, to assist managing the expectations of all affected.
Instead of the CAG meetings, which were sparsely attended, MASCG will be using an online form where reports can be made for the relevant agencies. This worked well in 2023 and will be mirrored this year.
